When I began playing baseball, even in 8U, I heard about using "tools."
Accumulating these tools was the difference between playing on a co-ed college team or competing for a national title. There are only five of these special tools in the game of baseball. Me? I am blessed to have four of them.
I'm blessed base paths seem shorter, so I love stealing bases. I aim for at least once per game, every game. From Rickey Henderson to Lou Brock, Tim Raines to Ty Cobb, the thing I try to share with those names is finding happiness 90 extra feet away.
As a left-field player in baseball, I understand the art and ability of fielding. Defense wins championships, and I've been on select teams from 12U to 16U. However, hitting for average is the most challenging tool to master but the most valuable to own. Look at Carl Yastrzemski, Miggy Cabrera, or the "Splendid Splinter" Ted Williams--each bat was feared, each player was respected.
This is the tool I cherish most because I can help my team the most with it. As an owner of four of these tools of the trade, I practice, practice, and practice using them each game I play. Those tools make me the player I am, but as I have learned, it takes the person you are to use them effectively.
